Ancient site
« on: Saturday 01 April 17 11:54 BST (UK) »
Hi,
once again this is probably not the right forum but here goes, just recently I was looking at a aeriel view of my house on Google earth when I saw in the field next to my property what looks like ancient ruins, when I asked the older residents around the village about my findings no one could explain or remember anything which could have left these markings. Can anyone could tell me if there is  a site where you can upload your findings and have someone look at them.

Is there a local Archeological Sociey you could show them to or perhaps the Archeology Department of a local University?

No, seems no one really is interested in the ancient history of the place.

It depends how ancient. Old maps may provide some information.

You could try this for starters: LINK

Great minds ... I was going to suggest that.  ;)

When looking at old maps you often notice things like "site of monastery", "stone circle", "roman ruins" or similar which are not marked on modern maps.

Would you be prepared to give the name of the town or village so we can have a look for you? (completely understandable if you do not wish to, and please do not provide your address)

As well as the excellent NLS maps Handypandy provided a link to, there are a lot of other old maps online so someone may be able to dig some more up for you. Your local library might also have some.

Added: don't get too excited though in case what you can see is not particularly old.  Is anything visible from the ground?

Thanks very much that's brilliant, sadly nothing on old map but I do know there was a old ring fort across the road,  when the weather gets a bit dryer I hope to try and locate its underground chamber (Souterrain)  I can post the Google maps aerial view if that would be of any assistance to you. I'm located in the west of Ireland.

ooo, how interesting! It looks more ancient than the local residents might remember, so I'm not surprised they don't know anything about it. These things often aren't noticed until you see the aerial view and some of the older folks probably haven't done so.

Surely there must be a database of such landmarks somewhere? Someone must be interested!
