I can't see any death in 1861 - where is that mentioned?

Ellen Treherne married Philip Alexander 10 May 1858 Eardisland, Herefordshire.

This marriage would then be just a few weeks before the birth of Ambrose.

GRO index has death for Edwin Sandoz Sep 1861 Birmingham age 1 which on the face of it would appear to match the Edwin Sandoz birth Jun 1860 Birmingham.

PS Free BMD index has the death as Sandor
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

There was a divorce petition filed 7 Dec 1897 by Elizabeth Catherine against Edwin but they appear to be together in 1901 census so certainly a confusing family  :-\

I was hoping it would show alternative names for Edwin - like Ambrose - but it doesn't.

Doesn't all make sense but am thinking it must have been Ambrose that died.  I wonder if there is a family grave or anything that might mention him?

Thanks I have found it now as Sandor.  :) the child seems to be buried in a public grave.

That Divorce Petion seems to be a damp squib, and appears to not have gotten very far!

Emile and Susanna had a boy 1851 2nd Q died 4th Q.... also given name Edwin.

Ambrose born 1858 3rd Q, does not appear on 1861 census.

Edwin born 1960 2nd Q, was on 1861 census with parents and we have a death 1861 of an Edwin.
Edwin was with his Aunt Ellen in Wales 1871 census, Ellen had married a wealthy man by all accounts, maybe he sponsored him as Edwin became a Surgeon Dentist
Cannot find Edwin on 1881 census yet
1891 Edwin Lodger in wales ....Strangely gives birth place as Switzerland , age as 34 ( which gives a d-o-b of 1857)
married 1892
Wife petitioned for divorce 1897
1901 census  Abegevenny with wife
1911 census     --ditto--

I will order certificates, but I think something strange goin on here!!!

The marriage cert in the divorce papers states Edwin's father's name is Eugene, occupation watchmaker.

They must have kept the divorce action fairly well under wraps - I can't see a sniff of it in the welsh papers, unlike other issues inthe family at the same time, when there seems to be a degree of contesting the wills of his uncle and aunt Philip and Ellen Alexander and their son (also Philip) who all died in the mid 1890s.  at the time the Sandoz's address was still the same as the Alexanders - Sunnyside, Abergavenny

Right, I have 3 certificates. Having to "intelligently" guess date as handwriting not clear.

Ambrose Jabez Sandoz, born 1st June 1858, 77 Barr Street, father Emile Sandoz, Mother Susannah Sandoz... formally Treherne. Informant father.

Edwin Sandoz, born 5th May 1860, back of 44 Great King Street, father Emile Sandoz, Mother Susannah Sandoz....Formally Treherne.  Informant Mother.

Edwin Sandoz,  Died 1st August 1861, back of 44 Great King Street, son of Emile Sandoz, cause of death Diarrhoea (Certified), informant  Ann Sandoz, present at death.  (I assume Susannah)

Is it possible that  after loosing 2 boys with the given name Edwin, Ambrose took  the name (or was given it)......... I note that Susannah had a brother ALSO called Edwin born June and died July 1832 so that may be the reason the name held significance.

BUT that still doesn't tell me where Ambrose (aka Edwin was on the night of the 1861 Census)
The search goes on!

Yes I think you're right about the name Edwin being significant and Ambrose may have used the name but where he was is  ???
