A Bulgarian wandering in 18th century Ireland would be a rarity indeed.
Is there any other direction you can approach looking for his name? His daughter's baptism perhaps?

Yes, I had reasoned that his first name (whatever it is) would have come from his mothers side, Devlin of course being an irish name.

Hi Dublin, Unfortunately this is the only instance of his name appearing anywhere at all, it's the death record of my 4th great grandfather Edward Devlin. I'm still trying to track down another mention of his name.

Thanks Aghadowey. There does appear to be a gaelic word Nochar, though I haven't managed to pin down its meaning yet. I'll try and do a little research around the name and see what I come up with

Browsing through https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Irish-language_given_names#Native_masculine_names, another possibility (just a wild guess) is that the given name could be Aodhán.

The first letter could well be an 'A' and there don't seem to be any native Irish names beginning with 'N'. The second letter seems to be an 'o'. A third letter could be a 'd' or the fourth letter could be an 'h'. What doesn't match is that the same downstroke would these days be tied to either the 'd' or the 'h' but not both.

If combining the d and h was common practice (because the combination occurred often) or just by coincidence in this case then Aodhán would be the Irish name that I see best matching the handwriting.

Hope this helps,

Mike

Thanks Mike, all suggestions are welcome, I'm certainly not ruling anything out.

Thanks for the help  :)
