Photo dating unknown British Naval Officer
« on: Wednesday 03 May 17 17:48 BST (UK) »
Hi,
This photo was found in my grandmother's very small photo collection when she died. We dont know who he is. Possibly surname Gaunt or Cumberland.
If I could please have help dating it then searching for possibilities would be easier.
Many thanks in advance
Cheryl

Do you have the full frame?  If we could see the name and address of the photographer's studio it may be possible to check local records to see when the studio existed.

All the best
Philip

Photographer: Ephraim Pope Short, 35 Derby Road, Nottingham. He was there early 1900's. I've seen a 1901 (Rootschat post) and a 1905 National Archives entry.

Thank you both very much for your replies.  The copy of the photo I have did not have anything further on it.  Many thanks for figuring it out for me and giving me those dates.

Regards,
Cheryl :)

I am no expert (so someone with more knowledge may correct me!) but I think the stripes on the sleeve suggest that he held the rank of Commander.

Thank you!  I'm glad you said that because I thought  the same thing.  I have been searching military files to see if anyone with any of the family surnames pops up. A fun mystery to solve ☺
