? DYER, witness to marriage October 1835
« on: Saturday 10 June 17 05:17 BST (UK) »
The marriage of John Jones DYER and Theresa Caroline MIDLANE took place, by licence at the parish church, Mere, Wiltshire.  Witnesses with clear signatures are:
George Shepherd DYER (groom's brother),
Gawen HOLLOWAY (bride's uncle),
Frances Agnes MIDLANE (bride's sister),
S MEREDITH, (groom's uncle),
Sarah Payne COWDRY (friend)
George MIDLANE and Maurice Wemyss MIDLANE, uncles of bride.
Lydia MEREDITH (groom's aunt)

There's also a signature with a forename that I can't read. Obviously the surname is DYER so related to the groom.  Possible forenames of relatives, but there may have been others: Emma, Samuel, William, Henry, Harriet,

Emma looks the closest  ???

It's the first name on last line, before Maurice and Lydia?

I see: Starts with an E, ends with an 'a' and 'take away' the downstroke of the y written in the name above...it looks like a clear Emma to me?

 :)
Cheers

I agree with AMBLY when you take away the downstroke from the 'y' in Payne it looks like the witness first name is Emma.

I think you're right - I looked at it as though that downstroke was an upstroke part of the DYER name but it obviously belongs to Ms Cowdry.

Thank you!  Judith
