Using the new GRO index that gives mothers maiden name
All the children I listed are Elen with no mothers maiden name listed, if he were the son of Richard and and Elizabeth Tyrell Elen then the maiden name of Tyrell would be listed.

Thank you for your help.

I have found births on the GRO index where no mother's name is listed, and then seen the same birth on Findmypast where it is listed (and the parents are married), so I think there may be some omissions on the GRO site. There are also other Elen children on GRO without listed MMNs. To be sure of Thomas's mother, I think the baptism record needs to be seen.

By chance, Ancestry just came up with a tree that had Alice Marion Elen (b 1878) married to a Francis Arthur Wilson (b 1875). However, I cannot find this marriage, nor any Francis Arthur Wilson born around 1875. In fact, no trace of either of them, so not sure where this information came from.

If it is true, then the mystery of what happened to Alice will be solved! The marriage would most likely have taken place in London. Could anyone confirm this marriage please? Thank you.

Thank you Comberton, that's very helpful.

The GRO has a Frederick Smith with mmn Elen registered Q1 1900 in Glanford Brigg, Lincolnshire. Elen is an unusual name, so it is possible that Alice Marion Elen married Mr Smith about 1899, and he died some time before 1941.

There's a Fred Smith in Glanford Briggs district in 1901 with mother Alice, but she's a local girl. All the other children with that couple in 1901  & 1911 have mmn Neal

Typo?

Thanks for that information Mabel.

Perhaps Alice married a widower with children....was Fred aged one and were the children with mmn Neal older? Sometimes the place of birth is incorrect.
