Thanks, Carole, very interesting. There is a mention in my files somewhere of a Richard Summers, I will have to trawl through some letters again and resurrect.
So, if I have this right:
Henry Smith 1838/9 married Margaret Elliott 1845 (father William Elliott) in 1862. His father was a Richard Summers of Shadfen. Richard (father Matthew) had married a Margaret Smith of Hepscott in 1851, in Morpeth, her father being Henry Smith.
So we don't know exactly who Henry 1838's mother was. He had the name Smith which suggests his mother was a Smith, intriguing.
Just as I was typing this a reply came in from fiddlerslass, which points us to Margaret being Henry 1838's mother. Perhaps she and R Summers eventually married some years later and Henry just kept the Smith name?

1851 census for Henry Smith has grandparents as Henry and Barbara Smith (she is shown as born Ellingham). Margaret Smith is showing as born Warkworth age 36.

There is this baptism in Warkworth for Margaret Smith born Sept 17 bapt Oct 21 1810 2nd daughter of Henry Smith of Acklington Coalhouses Native of Bamborough by his wife Barbara Stafford Native of Ellingham Parish.

The only Margaret Summers married to a Richard Summers in Northumberland in the 1861 census is showing as born Acklington in 1809.

The ages are clearly inconsistent but add the above to the mix for your consideration.

Yes, dates and birth places are often somewhat inconsistent, but often the truth comes out in the wash.
