I know this is the tidying up and improvement forum, but I am chasing shadows!

We believe its James Joseph Williams Born 1893 in Lambeth.

Thanks in advance

David, could you post higher resolution scans of a couple of the small photos? This is what happens when I blow them up for a direct comparison:
Convicts: COSIER (1791); LEADBEATER (1791); SINGLETON (& PARKINSON) (1792); STROUD (1793); BARNES (aka SYDNEY) (1800); DAVIS (1804); CLARK (1806); TYLER (1810); COWEN (1818); ADAMS[ON] (1821); SMITH (1827); WHYBURN (1827); HARBORNE (1828).
Commoners: DOUGAN (1844); FORD (1849); JOHNSTON (1850); BEATTIE (& LONG) (1856); BRICKLEY (1883).
Outlaws: MCGREGOR (1883) & ass. clans, Glasgow, Glenquaich, Glenalmond and Glengyle.

From what I can see I think they all look like the same chap (though the photos are not clear, and I can barely see him in the fourth photo). If they are WW1 uniforms it would tally with him being a young man at the time.

I'm of the same view - same jaw, mouth and hairline
(except pic no.4 is too fuzzy for me to comment on)

I'm comfortable, the more I look at the various old photos in the box, the same face keeps appearing. Now it could be that my great grandmother so happened to keep a collection of photos of the wrong guy... or he is my James Joseph!- 3rd in from the right- back row
