Sompting Sussex, date of photo?
« on: Wednesday 12 July 17 13:27 BST (UK) »
This lady might be my grandfather's sister. Her name was Ellen Lisher and she was born 1857 and married Charles Grenyer in Sompting, Sussex in 1879. Would somebody be able to put a date on the photo from the clothes that they are wearing? Thank you for any enlightenment.

A very non-expert student opinion, so beware. I'd suggest turn of the century, i.e., about 1900 give or take a couple of years. The graduates should be along to confirm mine or say it's complete rubbish. Cheers, Peter.

A cut, polish and repaint for Ellen and Charles while we think about dates. Cheers, Peter.

Wow, Peter, that's really kind of you to have improved the pictures - I didn't expect that. I too thought early 1900s in which case, she would be my great aunt - apart from the fact that she also looks like my mum's sister. Thanks a lot!

My pleasure, Naukit. Just be aware that I'm very much a beginner in dating pictures; hopefully an expert will see your post and confirm it for both of us! Cheers, Peter.

These are divided back postcards so not before 1902. Seeing the back of one may help.
He doesn't give much away regards a date except to say late Edwardian as that's when collar tabs on shirts became popular.
She is about the same time but could be into the war years. The jabot (the thing round her neck) made a brief re-appearance around mid late 1900's. but not seen much after about 1908.
As the backdrops are the same one might assume taken at the same time.

I was looking for some photos for colour practice and found yours - so hope you dont mind to much a splash of colour  ;)  (not everybody's preference to colour)
Restorers : Please do not use my restorations without asking my permission first. Thanks.

Good quality size scans will mean much better restores >> hint hint :-)

That's ok, I'm sure he would be quite flattered to have his beard tinted! - no more grey hairs!
