Mary BABBIDGE
« on: Sunday 31 July 05 17:42 BST (UK) »
Hello, I'm looking to tie up some more info on one of my ancestors was a Mary Babbidge from Holborne Rogus, Devon. She was born in approximately 1816 and went on to marry Samuel Burnell, moving with him to neighbouring Somerset (Coombe Florey).

This surname is the only one that i have in Devon so i will only be looking back at this part of the site periodically, please drop me a message if you have any info.

There's a little more information on my website at www.familytreeuk.co.uk

thanks,
Andrew

Brian, you are a gem.

Yes, i do mean Holcombe Rogus... that'll serve me right for speed typing whilst drinking a cup of tea!

"Lydeard St Lawrence" has cropped up already in my research clues, so i'm glad to see it appear again.

Thank you VERY much for your kindness.

many thanks,
Andrew

i recently received the marriage certificate, which revealed that Samuel Burnell's father was named ROBERT BURNELL and that Mary Babbidge's father was named JOHN BABBAGE.

The marriage took place on Christmas Day 1839 at Coombe Florey, Somerset and both were noted as being resident of the parish.

Mary's surname is spelt as BABBAGE as opposed to BABBIDGE, as some records have already shown (including the birth certificate of her son, my Gt Gt Grandfather).

So, armed with earlier info that the Babbage/Babbidge family stopped off in Holcombe Rogus, Devon, i'm now looking for a Mary Babbage, born circa 1817 there, the daughter of John Babbage.

I just googled for BABBAGE in Devon and stumbled across these pages about a Charles Babbage, a mathematical forefather of the computer.

http://ei.cs.vt.edu/~history/Babbage.html, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Babbage and http://www-history.mcs.st-andrews.ac.uk/Mathematicians/Babbage.html. Interesting reading but of no obvious connection (yet).

hi Debbi,
Thanks for that. A quick search on www.familysearch.org shows that in the late 1700s, there were a Philip, Joan and John Babbedge in Fremington.

I have no idea if these are at all related but it is encouraging to see the John Babbedge as christened in 1795, which may help point towards the birth of my Mary Babbidge in about 1817.
