William & Rachel Slew Marriage/Origins
« on: Sunday 23 July 17 21:26 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I have been trying for several months now, and I can't seem to locate the marriage for the above William & Rachel Slew. Their daughter, Ann, was born August 4th 1805 in Newington in Surrey and she was my 3x great grandmother. They had an elder daughter called Mary Ann who was born in May of 1803 in Southwark and a younger daughter called Esther born September 10th 1811 in Surrey.

I have found links to suggest that William was born c.1774 in London, but nothing concrete, nor have I been able to find a Marriage for a William Slew to a Rachel, the records just don't seem to exist? I would love to be able to go further back with this line, but also understand I may have hit a brick wall here.

Can anyone suggest anything to help?

Many thanks

Keelan

Marriages traditionally took place in the wife's parish. Do you know where Rachel came from?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

census information is Crown Copyright from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi
William's christening is at St Luke's Chelsea 13.3.1774 s of John and Margaret Slew.
Sisters Susanna 30.6.1776,Elizabeth 24.3.1771 and brother John Mar 1779.

Again I can't see a marriage for his parents.

Thanks for your replies!

Lizdb - I unfortunately don't know where Rachel came from, I cannot find a record with her maiden name so I can't look for her birth record. I have done a wide search for William & Rachel's marriage record with a variety of variations on Slew but haven't been able to find a record anywhere.

ciderdrinker - thank you for the those names, more to add to the tree!

I also can't find a death record for a Rachel Slew.

Hi
I can't see a death either.
I did find John and Margaret's marriage at St George the Maytr Southwark 25.2.1770
John Slew indexed as New and Margraet Harris
both of this parish wit Christian Norris and Richard Matante.
Margaret buried Chelsea 6 Feb 1784.Looks like John 29.8.1750

baptism for John at Chelsea 12.6.1750 to John and Elizabeth Slew
Parents married at St Clement Danes 27.8.1749  John  Slew and Elizabeth Bryerley.
Burial  John Chelsea 26 Nov 1749.

There's a possible son for William and Rachel -Thomas buried St George The Maytr Southwark 27 Dec 1800 son of William Slew from St George Fields.

The Slews are proving quite difficult to find.

Hi Ciderdrinker (Love the name),

Thanks for the info. So according to what you have found, John Slew Sr. died a few months after his marriage to Elizabeth Bryerley (sp?), if this is the case I am guessing she was pregnant with John Slew Jr. at the time as he was born in May of 1750.

The Burial of John Jr. on 29.8.1750 confuses me though as the John who married Margaret Harris in 1770 obviously wouldn't have died in 1750. Unless this is a different John who was buried in 1750.

I also found the burial of Thomas Slew (Possible son of William & Rachel). I don't understand why they are proving so difficult to find, I haven't  heard of the name Slew before finding it in my own family tree. They are very elusive! Maybe if they were poor, that would have some impact on their existence in the Parish records?

Who knows.

Hi Keelan,

There is also a William Slew baptised at Chelsea on 17 Oct 1773 to Thomas & Mary. Siblings, Joseph in 1784, Mary Ann in 1772, and Thomas in 1781. Both Thomas and Mary Ann are names used by your William for his own children?

Another possible child of William & Rachel is William Henry Slew, buried 2 Nov 1809 at St Mary Newington, a child born abt 1809.
