My father never claimed benefits attended NHS doctor or dentist
When he was 75 I pushed him to claim pension he said he didn't have a ni number and was issued an emergency one which he was then paid pension through
My mother wasn't married no and they stayed together until he passed
His date of birth is just what he told us he had no official documents nor did I find any on his death   It's crazy isn't it

A bit of a very long shot but have you looked at the 1939 register on FindMyPAst for possible Yates/Yeats/Yeates families in Bolton?

Do you know if your father served during WW2?

Also, do you remember any of your father's employers?  Outside chance that they may have maintained employee records that have been deposited in local archives.

So do we assume that whatever jobs he had, he was paid cash?  Don't you have to produce an NI no. to get a job?  Or maybe that wasn't the case 70 or so years ago.

Ah I see, self employed.  So that probably means he never declared his income thereby never paying any tax or nat. insc.

Hmm, wonder if he was in any of the services during the war.  He may have made that up.

The only way to check that is to see if there are any WW2 service papers for him.  You have to apply for those and it costs £30.  Link below

https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records/overview

This tells you all about what to do.  Up to you as to whether you want to chase that up.

I looked on the Forces War Records website and it shows a D. Yates Leading Aircraftman, service no. 1073008.  I don't have a sub. anymore so can't check the full details.

So perhaps his remark about serving in the RAF might be true or may not.  There is no full first name given for the D. Yates above.

I am wondering given his lack of engagement with any authorities and always took cash in hand jobs whether he may be a runaway Gypsy?
Or if he had been in care or prison when growing up and wanted to forget his past.
I fear you may never know as he doesn't appear to have left a paper trail.
On Genes Reunited, you are the only person who comes up in a search for him with the info that you have given.
I feel for you  :-\

If he didn't die till 2000,then his 1939 record will still be closed until a hundred years have passed since his birth (2020)
