With a surname like McNeilly I thought Irish too.

Have you checked the Scottish censuses to see if any of the family are from "Ireland"?

Hi all

Thanks for your responses once again.

The death cert is for William McNeilly born c.1821 married a Helen McIntyre born c.1829 presumably both from Ireland.

Can't find a marriage cert for them. William is listed as a general labourer on his death cert, so finding him on a census has been fun! Fruitless, but fun.

I will have another go.

Wondering if this could be one child for William and Helen https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQNN-XLH  It is the only one showing for this couple so if them maybe just over from Ireland. The birth cert should show date and place of parents' marriage so some clues always on possible Irish origins.

Also, if them, they should show on the 1871 census you would think...but hard to see them.

I think this is the family in 1871, mistranscribed by a/try (haven't checked on SP to see how it shows there). Everyone showing as born in Ireland except youngest John:

William Mckell 40 Mason's Lab
Ellen Mckell 40
Mary Mckell 17 Linen Weaver
Margaret Mckell 15 Linen Spinner
George Mckell 13
Sarah Mckell 11
William Mckell 9
John W Mckell 2 b Glasgow

Address: 181 Garngadhill, Glasgow/High Church...is the address on William and wife Helen's death regs (from an a/try family tree).

One other child in case you miss her... :-\

There is a death on SP index for a four year old Martha MCNEILLAY in High Church/Glasgow. Mother's maiden name McIntyre. Death is in 1870 so she missed the 1871 census.

So, I have managed to track down a birth cert for William McNeilly's youngest child - listed the marriage date between William McNeilly and Ellen McIntyre as 7 June 1844 in Killybegs, County Donegal. Cannot for the life of me see where to locate a marriage cert for this????

It has been a while since I have been doing my family tree. A recent DNA test through a/try sparked a new interest!!
