1714 Symbol
« on: Monday 07 August 17 03:17 BST (UK) »
I'm researching my ancestor Thomas Dickinson (variably spelled Dickison, Dickason, Dickenson) and ran across a 1714 deed from Virginia where "Dickin" in his signature has been substituted with a symbol, i.e. "Thomas [symbol]son."  Is this symbol shorthand for "Dickin" in secretary hand or an old handwriting style?  I've never seen anything like this before.
