Please include names and location in title
« on: Monday 01 August 05 10:38 BST (UK) »
AM I NIT PICKING HERE? What do you think.

I and many others troll trawl up and down the Worcestershire message board to see if we can help. If members would be good enough to include the name and location in the title we can pick them up more easily
e.g. "Seeking Beard in Madresfield" or "Jones in Worcester - 1841 census" rather than "I lost my family", "Can any body help me", etc.

As before I do hope I am not out of place making this suggestion again, but it will make life a lot easier for us Trolls Trawlers.

Hey there's a new Rootschat title "Trawlers" ;D

I find this offensive.

The term troll in this context was applied as trolling or perhaps trawling in better pronunciation.

As I have now recieved a number of insulting replies to my posts I am obviously at loggerheads with the idea of the board. I therefore resign.

Hi Michael,

In an internet context, troll was an unfortunate choice of word.
It has a very negative meaning and if you Google for it you will soon see why.

Please  don't resign !
We always have room for people like you who trawl the boards and try to help others ....

... but trolls will not be tolerated

regards,
Bob

Hi Michael,

I agree with comments about "looking" at boards for something to answer - you need something to catch your eye.

I did not know what a "troll" was but have now done a "google" and see what it means!

I KNOW you did not mean that - you have helped me in the past - please don't resign over such a small matter as a misunderstanding.

Cheers

Keith

You learn something new every day.  I had no idea what it meant either!   I do agree about the titles though but it seems that very few people read the instructions for posting and until you have been a member for some time you do not realise how important it is.   Would it be very hard work for the moderators to have a standard personal message to send to new people?  A sort of "welcome pack"?    Many of them do always welcome newcomers in a post so it would just be an extension of that.    They could also suggest that everyone looks at the beginners' tips.   Just a thought for Berlin Bob to mull over!

I wanted to steer this back to the original theme, but Andrea /Sillgen has already done it ! Thanks !

It is a fact that most searchers need something to cach their eye ....

... some searchers will notice a surname
... some searchers will notice a place
... some will notice the census date ( and place) - "I've got that CD !"
... some will go for an amusing phrase
... some will be turned off by (what to you is) an amusing phrase

but most will get fed up after a while with "looking for Grandma", "1891 census lookup", and other phrases of that ilk.

So please, everyone, without saying "This is how it MUST be done !", please think about your topic titles !

Thanks,
Bob

I feel as if I had "handbags at dawn" syndrome :P

However to see such support has restored the will to live.
You all know we just could not resign from such a great message board. I just felt a bit depressed having received two rather pointed messages from peeved posters.
who took objection to a simple request.

So ""Hello Sailor lets get TRAWLING.

Best wishes to all
Mike

Oh dear, oh dear, I shrink to very small size, I've just looked up the "t" word on Google.

Please be asssured where I come from in Worcestershire the meaning would be understood as I intended.
