Lost William James Spencer
« on: Saturday 19 August 17 14:13 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the death or any information on William James Spencer born 18.01.1883 10 Church Street St George Hanover Square.  Both his parents died around 1896 (William Spencer) & 1898 (Anne Louisa Daniel).  In 1901 I believe he was a Boarder living in Lambeth although am not categorically sure of this.
1917 I have him resident in Vancouver and joining the Canadian European Forces I know this is him as he has put his sister Charlotte down as NOK.  Reg No. 2021073.
Living at 502 Broadway E Vancouver.
1923 he arrives in Seattle Washington, Occ Miner.
Here it gets a little confusing because I do not think I am reading the documents correctly:
Wm James Spencer
Gender   Male
Nationality   English
Arrival Age   40
Birth Date   1883
Birth Place   London, England
Last Residence   Canada
Departure Place   Vancouver, British Columbia
Arrival Date   Sep 1923
Arrival Place   Seattle, Washington
Line Number   27

Wm James Spencer
Gender   Male
Nationality   Canadian
Arrival Age   40
Birth Date   abt 1883
Birth Place   London, England
Arrival Date   20 Jan 1923
Ship Name   GNR

Name   Wm James Spencer
Gender   Male
Nationality   Canadian
Arrival Age   40
Birth Date   abt 1883
Birth Place   London, England
Arrival Date   26 Jan 1923
Ship Name   GNR

And this is where I lose him.  I have searched Canadian records and United states and he just seems to have disappeared.

I have gone onto the Canadian library and Archives but cannot find anything.  I think he was Naturalised as a Canadian citizen.

Many thanks

Sue

The September 1923 entry into the states also includes the following:

Last permanent residence:  Vancouver, BC
Final Destination:  Portland, Oregon
Length of time (intending to remain in the US): "6 mo Less"
Every entry on the page has this notation - so were they all intending to return to Canada in 6 months or less?  :-\

Hi Lisa in California

Thank you so much I think you may have solved my problem.  However I cannot see on the documents where it says 6 months stay only!  My copies arn't great, could you tell me where it states it on the paper.

Many thanks

Sue

Hi Sue:

Using a "pay site", the September 1923 arrival in Seattle, Washington shows Wm James Spencer (on line 27) with some of his personal details (age, marital status, last residence, etc.) and other information.

Looking at the following page, it shows his travel information, and more personal information (colour of hair and eyes, etc.).  Column 20 shows how long passengers intended to stay in the U.S.  Near the top of the image is "6 mo Less" with ditto marks going down the page.  I hope this helps.   :)

Thank you, Lisa
