Birth and Parents of Enoch (1849 - 1880)

Hi 

I wondered if anyone could help me find a birth date and the parents of an Enoch Morecroft.

Enoch was married in 1875 in Dinapore, India to a Caroline Kelly. The record states he was born in 1849.

Enoch served in the 109th Regiment of the Bombay Infantry and later the 66th Berkshire Regiment. He was killed in action in 1880 - I don't know if these facts will be at all helpful to anyone.

His marriage record states his father was 'G Morecroft', which hasn't proved to be helpful so far. I've found a potential birth in 1847 for Enoch in Staffordshire, but I cannot find the family on any Census Records.

Church Broughton (Derbyshire) was in the Tutbury sub-district of the Burton upon Trent (Staffordshire) Registration District.

There is this baptism

Enoch MOORCROFT bapt. 17 Jul 1847 Church Broughton. Mother: Ann Earp Moorcroft. No father is listed.

Ann Earp Moorcroft married a Herbert Goodall in Church Broughton 10 Dec 1849 , searching the census with Goodall, may possibly help find Enoch.

Ann was 27 when she married and her father was listed as William Earp.

I actually can't see another birth for another Enoch Moorcroft.

He is in the 1861 census as Goohall if using Anc*

Thank you for your help. It's strange that he has a father listed on his marriage record when it may well be he was illegitimate.

Quite common for those times - the sins of the fathers were well visited upon the children in this situation. Many made up a parent for their marriage certificates.

In 1841 there is an Ann Earp age 20 with a William Earp age 60 in Melbourne, Derbyshire.
Also christening that has her name as Ann Earp Moorcroft, mother Sarah Moorcroft.

I note that one of the witnesses of Enoch's marriage is shown as G Morecroft.

On the 1871 army list here is a George Morecroft in the same regiment as Enoch in India.

There is a baptism in Church Broughton 13 June 1845 for a George Moorcroft - mother named as Anne Moorcroft (no father given). Possibly showing as Earp in groindex (Burton on Trent RD). 1851 census showing as George Earp with grandparents. Showing as George Earp in 1861 as well but in 1881 as George Moorcroft and 1891 as George Morecroft. Does not seem to be visible in the 1871 census.

Might George and Enoch have been brothers?

In 1881, George Morecroft (b Church Brougton) is married to a Harriet. Possible marriage George Moorcroft age 32 to Harriet Knight age 21 on 29 Apr 1879 at Ripley Derbyshire. Her father is Robert Knight, he says his is called George Moorcroft.
