Hi Sue

Thank you so much for everything. Genealogy seems to bring out the best in people, and it certainly has with you. You have been so helpful, with a family that we thought was going to be impossible to trace.

Best of luck and wishes to you and yours!

Well, you both won't believe this, but I am researching BOTH Alma Marks and Violet Ward. I am part of the St. Tudy History Group and a few of us have started mapping out the village, starting with the 1911 Census.  I picked a few properties out, to tell the personal stories behind the occupants, and hence me researching both of your ancestors.  Both Violet Ward (Emma Violet Ward) and Alma Marks lived with a Belguim lady called Louise Juste in 1911 in the St. Tudy area at Hendra Sauvigney, St. Tudy.  Louise Juste was a Language Teacher and I think it was a sort of finishing school for ladies.  Violet Ward was a Pupil and Alma Marks was a General Domestic.  Alma was illigitimate and I found her in the 1891 Census at 2 months of age.  In the 1901 Census she is listed as the Grandaughter of Richard & Caroline Marks.  It is not clear from the Census whose daughter she is: Richard - son, or Annie - Daughter.  I would guess at the Daughter, but you would have to get the birth certificate to confirm all of this.  I have a lot more information on the household, and it is all very interesting, if you would like to contact me - I am in St. Tudy, not far away.  My new question is how did Alma Marks get and why did she go to Canada - did Louise Juste organise this?  Many thanks, Pam

Hi Pam,

I'm sorry to say that my Violet Ward and yours are not the same person, mine is my grandmother who came from West Bromwich Staffs.

I too have done some local history research for an area near Luxulyan where until very recently I lived. ( still in Cornwall now) The name Marks had come up in my own research both as a surname and a place name, the cottages where I lived were called Mark's Cottages.

Anyway enjoy your journey into the history of your village.....I often wish that walls could talk and fill in the gaps but usually we just have to use our imaginations and make a few assumptions.

Sue

Hi Pam,

Alma Marks was my husband's (paternal) grandmother. A wonderful lady to say the least. I am very excited to see what you have found.

I will send you a personal message, with my email, so that you can contact me personally. That way, I can send you what I have so far, and hopefully, if you find photos etc., in your research, you will also share with us.

Just a note to say that her mother was Annie, and father unknown. Alma was born on the 22 January 1891 at Little Lodge, Liskeard. She came to Canada in 1913 as a Domestic. In 1914, she gave birth to her only child, a son.

I will share all of this information with you, including documents.
