I shouldn't think they will be very different.  Perhaps it depended on the type of mine and how deep they went?   Hard work anyway!

A coal miner is a generic term for any underground worker in a coal mine.

A coal hewer is the person who breaks out the coal from the seam, i.e. the person who actually cuts the coal on the coal face.

Is that the same difference as a collier and a miner? ???

Genuine question...my grampa was a 'collier' and there was a lot of grumbling if he was ever referred to as a miner :o

Wondering of Wales!!  (Yes I know I should know!) :-[

Stafford - Glos, Liles - Glos, Bright- Glos, Webb - Monmouthshire & Glos, Smart - Glos, Smith - Glos
Sullivan - Ireland, Jones (oh dear! Almost as bad as Smith), Walker - Somerset, Llewellyn
And, no don't laugh...Crump...I think it's great!

And of course, if I ever do manage to do a successful look up it is crown copyright and all that legal stuff!
