St Catherine's Convent, Shieldfield Green, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
« on: Thursday 21 September 17 14:21 BST (UK) »
Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge of this convent.
I have the 1911 census listing a possible ancestor Emily Joice. She is one of eight young single women recorded as being a patient and occupation is "Laundress"
I wonder if the convent was for unmarried mothers
Many thanks

There is a notice in the Jarrow Express - Friday 11 August 1905 of a death in St. Catherine Convent Hospital, Shieldfield Green.
She is not a laundress. The laundress only applies to two women, opposite each of the six other women in the column "Personal Occupation" is  a - not a "

This is the description of the Institution from the 1911 census form, it covers five dwelling houses including the hospital and the convent

Thanks for your reply Stan.  I can see now that she was not occupied as a laundress and is indeed a patient here.

You can see the Hospital and the Convent on the map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html#/Map/425480/564632/13/100511

Hello
I have just received my ancestor's death certificate and it says she died at St Catherine's Hospital in 1886, profession was laundress and cause of death was Phthisis (TB?)
Were patients here for long-term stays such as pregnancy and then birth followed by adoption, or TB patients 'employed' at the hospital?
Many thanks
Karen.

There is also another possibility, she could have been a laundress by occupation but was in the hospital as she was  ill?
I have no knowledge of this convent but certainly other similar types of records e.g. those in a workhouse hospital are noted with the person's occupation before they were admitted.

This is the National Archives entry for the Diocese archives

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/a/A13531452

perhaps an enquiry to the archivist (there's an email address on that page) may get you at least some general info about the hospital.
