1841 census- Lochmaben- Buchanan's.
« on: Tuesday 02 August 05 10:43 BST (UK) »
Looking for Christopher Buchanan b abt 1821 Dumfries ,parish unknown. Also his father James and mother and any siblings , ages and places of birth also unknown.
On Freecen 1841 , he is not recorded in the parishes of Dalton, Dunscore, Tundergarth or Middlebie,Christophers first son was born at Wallacehall Middlebie in 1843, mother Jean Blacklock.
There are Buchanan's and Blacklock's living in Middlebie , possibly related.
1851 for Lochmaben a James Buchanan  and his family are  recorded, age 40  address  Halleaths occp, servant farmer , was wondering if he is part of Christopher's family.
1851 census for Cartmel Lanc,s Christopher and Jean (Jane) are living with three children at Lower Allithwaite , occp shepherd.

Will be glad of any help with the above.
Doreen.

Hiya Doreen,

A very warm welcome to Rootschat  ;D

You can strike the following parishes off the list too I'm afraid...

No Buchanans

Lochmaben
Lochmaben Landward
Gretna
Cummertrees
Annan Outskirts
Annan Landward
Dornock

Buchanans present

Dumfries
(Janet 60 publican & Janet 20 both of Dumfriesshire at King St ED 2 p 3))

Annan
(Mrs (!) 30, Janet 10 both not of county Lodge Wynd Ed 5, P 15)

It is a very rare name for the county  :-\

Sorry it isn't a great answer.

Pam

Hi Pam,
Thank you for your quick reply and for helping to narrow down my search of the parishes of Dumfries. I have sent emails to d&g fhs, regarding the 1841 census books, however, they are
very busy and as yet I'm waiting to here from them.
As I have found the family in Middlebie in 1843 when the first son was born I will go ahead and order the census books for the neigbouring parishes that circle

Hi Pam ,
my previous message ended prematurely, it seemed to go to the post stage before I had finished, was going to ask if  you knew anything about census books . On D&G FHS list of parishes would Dumfries Landward relate to the rural area.

Many thanks,

Doreen.

As far as I can tell Dumfries Landward are the larger number enumaration districts.  So that is primarily the area north of Dumfries which includes Locharbriggs, Georgetown, Kellwood, Lochthorn, Nunholm, Kelton, & Tinwald Downs amongst others.

Hope this helps,
Pam

Hi Pam, will order Dumfries Landward along with those which may record my Buchanans.
I will phone D&GFHS on monday, they may be able to say how long it takes for them to send the books to me.
 Many Thanks  Doreen.
