2nd (South) Middlesex Volunteer Rifle Corps formed in Fulham in 1859
« on: Sunday 08 October 17 08:28 BST (UK) »
Grateful for any assistance as to if/where I might find records of the 2nd (South) Middlesex Volunteer Rifle Corps.  The Corp was formed in Fulham in 1859.

The List of Volunteer Force Units in London in 1893 on London Wiki has this Corps at Waltham Green under Earl Cadogan.

I am looking for a William Henry Napper (Napier) born 1840 Ide, Devon.  Mother Ann Napper.

At the time of the 1851 census he was living with his aunt and uncle Harriet and William Clint(k).  They were living in the Gardeners Cottage, North End Villa, Fulham, Middlesex.

In the 1861 census he is married (unable to locate marriage details) and at Elstree, Aldenham; Sub District Bushey; Reg. District Watford, County Hertfordshire.

He migrated to New Zealand in 1874 .

To a Military Service Board Reservists Appeal (reported in the Dominion Newspaper, Wellington, New Zealand on 9 December 1916) William Henry Napier said that "he was an old volunteer".

Thanks
WNW

On the 1861 census, his wife's name is Harriet.
But on this census, William was 27 - so born 1834?

So, from FreeBMD, this looks a good fit:

Marriages, December qtr 1857
Stepney Registration District     vol 1c, page 924

Napper, William
+ And, on the same page +
Plaskett, Harriett Sarah

Hmmm? Not yet convinced that this is the same William Napper as yours?

Members of Volunteer Corps were part-timers, still holding a full-time job.

See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volunteer_Force
and
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kensington_Regiment_(Princess_Louise%27s)
which grew out of the 2nd (South) Middlesex Volunteer Rifle Corps.

Thanks KGarrad for your postings.
The info in the 1861 and 1871 census relate to "my" William Napier.  I have a range of ages for him as follows:
1861 census - 27 years (1834) Harriet (30yrs)
1871 census - 36 years (1835) Harriet (40 years)
1874 passenger list for "Northampton" - 29 years (1845) Harriet (33 years)
NZ Intention to Marry Notice 1880 - 35 years (1845) 2nd wife Angelina Brown 26 years
NZ Military Service Board Reservists Appeal - newspaper article December 1916 - 77 years (1839)
NZ Death Registration 1917 - 81 years has been crossed out and replaced with 76 (1841)

Interesting how the ages have changed depending upon the circumstances!

His wife is Juliet Harriet Farrow born 1829, Chard, Somerset d/o William and Mercy Farrow.
Julia Harriet Farrow died in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1877 age 47 years.  It states that she was married at 29 years in Fulham, Middlesex (c1858), however unable to find a marriage

The wiki articles are very interesting.  Were records kept of part timer volunteers?

I have been looking for years for the Napier/Farrow marriage and wonder if it could have been in a Nonconformist chapel?  And are William Henry Napier and William Henry Napper the same person?

I have found in the 1851 census a Harriet Farrer age 21 (1830) Laundress born Chard, Somerset in the household of Samuel Edeney, Shoe Maker at 10 Babmaes Mews, St James, Westminster, Middlesex.  Harriet Farrow's occupation is Laundress and wonder if she is the same person as Julia Harriet Farrow?

The search continues.

Thanks again for your postings.

Baptism 14th June 1840 William Henry Napper, son of Ann Napper of Ide - single woman

A further baptism, much later(!):
