Salford Photographs
« on: Tuesday 02 August 05 18:42 BST (UK) »
Hello

I have tried all sorts of sites, searched the Local history library and even begged old neighbours. I am looking for any photographs of Newall Street, Clifford Street, Didsbury Street or Ivy Terrace. These were all off Eccles New Road Salford 5 prior to being demolished in the 1970s. My main search is for Newall street as I was born and bred at 19 Newall street  in 1960 and left in 1971. A family called McArty or McArthy moved in after us and if anybody knows these perhaps they may have a photo of the house or street.

Thanks very much, all help will be responded to.

Have you tried Salford Council? photographs are often taken before housing is demolished to use for comparison when rebuilding takes place.

Hello

Thanks for that. I believe that all the photo's were donated to the Salford Local History library, but it may be worth me contacting them anyway..

Many Thanks

Wilf

Hello Nessie

Yes, I spend a lot of time at the local history library as it still near where I live. They have got something like 20000 photos of Salford, but guess what? None of Newall street!!

I will keep searching and unearthing old neighbours and I am sure one will turn up soon..

thanks again

Wilf

Hi Wilf,

I have just tried the online collection of images at Central Library, but could not find the streets you mentioned. It may however be worth hopping on a bus to search the collection at the library itself. Only a small selection are available online.

Thanks Sarah

The central library has a collection of photographs of streets in Manchester. Salford has it's own collection. I visited the central library some time ago and searched, to no avail. However, when I asked for a photo of another street in another part of Manchester, they did have one and when they brought it from the cellar I was in for a scary experience...If you want to know what reply and I'll tell you what happened.

thanks again

Wilf

Sarah

I was after a photo of Stanley street in Gorton, demolished in the 70s slum clearance. When I found they had a copy in the list I ordered it. As you are aware it takes about 10 minutes to get them. When it came back it was a lovely photo of the street with a picture of a young 12 year old girl stood on the doorstep of number 10. It was my wife, she lived there until she was 20. She was with her best friend at the time who now lives in Australia. Blimey, my hair stood on end when I saw it. Showed it my wife and mother in law amongst other family members who also could not believe it..How scary is that. ?

Regards

Wilf
