Wikitree - is it OK to link to living people or not?
« on: Thursday 02 November 17 10:20 GMT (UK) »
I've just spotted that a member of the extended family has created profiles for LIVING PEOPLE and added them to Wikitree.  Is this permitted?

I think it's very intrusive.

This person has added some second cousins by marriage, and their own spouse and mother-in-law  (but made the deceased mother-in-law and her living descendants private).  Yet the living second cousins and the daughter of one of them are not private.

Apparently "public and open are not options for living people" (what ever that means, does that mean people with accounts can see it?)

If the daughter is under 13 she should not be listed, just a placeholder for her (there are world protection laws for children)

Maybe it's worth contacting wiki and putting in a complaint about the tree.
Are you a member of the site? If so, can you contact the tree holder first? (I'm not so don't know how it works)
Kind regards

I'm not a member of the site Cell.

What is it with people that stick their beak into everyone else's business but keep their own stuff private?

Hi,
I THINK (my understanding of it)they are allowed to list living people by name only, like a public phone book, but not allowed to give any details other than that .
Children are not to be listed, just a place holder for them  (under 13)

I think its worth trying to get in contact with the tree holder and ask to remove the names from public, and also contact wikitree to put in a complaint as they may remove them.

If no joy from the tree  owner or Wikitree, I know what I'd do , I'd get back in contact with the owner and inform them if they do not remove the names, you will be making a tree of your own with their living descendants on it- seeing as they have absolutely no problem with making your close realtives  public. (Can be an idle threat if you have no intention of doing so, but they are not to know that)

Kind regards :)

Does that person know you if so you may be on his/her trusted list and such information is open to you and not to the general public.

I suggest you read the Wiki Tree Privacy Policy.

If he/she does not know you then it may be a breach of the privacy policy but please note it is allowed to add details of living people to the Wiki Tree if the privacy policy is adhered to, there is no blanket ban.

I don't have a log-in Guy.

It's public with the olive green icon (an open padlock) and it states:

"Anyone can view all the information on a Public profile. However, you still need to be in the Trusted List to add or change information.

Public and Open are not options for profiles of living people."

So, it does look like a breach of the rules.

Hi,
Here's their contact page :
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:WikiTree_Team
You can also send the admin a private message via the forum link on the same page

Please let us all know how you go with the complaint (if you do lodge complaint with them), as there have been a few posts from people on here over the years that have had the same problem with wikitree  that you are experiencing.

Looking at various reviews on the net, wikitree apparently (supposedly) takes privacy seriously. Apparently,  the living should not be open to the public, the only people who should be able to see it are the tree holders trusted list .
Perhaps the tree's creator put in a fake death date for them for them to be showing up like that.
Either way,  I would contact Wikitree about it
Goodluck
Kind regards
