1851 Look-up Request: Taft in Hitchin
« on: Wednesday 03 August 05 12:38 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

This is the first time I venture into Hertfordshire...  :P

I have a John Taft originally from Shropshire marrying a Charlotte Cherry in Ware RD in 1845, so I'm pretty confident they were in Herts in 1851.

This is what I have:

1871:
Hitchin, "Back of Highlander"(?)
John Taft, head, 61, Basket Maker, b. Cleobury Mortimer Shropshire
Charlotte, wife, 51, Plaitor, b. Pirton

1861:
(same address as 1871)
John Tafft, head, 51, Basket Maker, b. Cleobury Mortimer Shropshire
Charlot, wife, 43, Plaitor, b. Herts Pirton
Amelia, granddau, 3, b. Surrey Lambeth

Can anybody see them in 1851?
I am hoping for his children to be with him. There should/could be a John b. ca. 1836 and a George b. ca. 1838, both in Dudley Worcs.

Thanks for any help.

Tanja  :)

Hi Tanja,

Welcome to Hertfordshire.  The natives are quite harmless.

I have found a strange entry on the 1851 which has been heavily overwritten so that it is difficult to read.  However, here is my version -

HO/107/1710  F. 129  P.34. Highlander Cottage, Hitchin.
Charlotte Taff  Head  M  Age ?? Plaiter and School Mistress b. Pirton, Herts.
John Taff Son in Law  15  Errand Boy
George Taff  Son in Law  13  Plaiter
(Both boys born Gloucestershire  Looks like Edgeley)

Haven't found John as yet, but as there is no surname index to this census, the search is somewhat difficult.

I did say it was strange.

Regards   ..   Peter

 8) Great find!

Please don't spend too much time on a search for me - I wasn't aware that the census wasn't indexed. And this is very informative already, proving the connection between John sr. and George and John.

Thanks so much, Peter!
