Hi, Everyone,
Hopefully this will be my last request on here for info on John GOTOBED, waterman, b.1795, and his wife Susan, b. 1798 (maiden name MEASURES).
They are in the 1851 Census living in Annesdale, Ely, but completely disappear by the 1861.  Have never discovered definite proof of their individual demises/deaths, but was wondering whether they were still inhabiting Ely by 1861, but perhaps mistranscribed by the enumerators...
Many thanks in advance,
Keith

Hi,

There is a record of a John & Susan Gotobed in Holy Trinity Parish, Ely in the 1871 census.   It states that Susan was born in Granchester. John is recorded as being born around 1792, and Susan born around 1796.

If these are the right people, perhaps they moved away for a while? I have found people in my tree who have either been taken into the workhouse, or found to be visiting someone else at the time of the Census.

Hope this is of use.

Best wishes,

Lindsey

You will not find them in Ely in 1861, as its one of the 'missing' pieces

My goodness me,
Such a generous and swift response while I've been out of the house for the last half an hour or so, will take me a while to look through all these, but will be back very shortly with my comments...
Thank you so much, everyone!
Keith

Now, where was I...?
On reflection all of this input adds a little more to the speculation.  If I knew the exact birth/baptismal date of John GOTOBED (and of Susan Measures) I might be clearer about whether those sightings of his namesakes are genuinely him or not.  And if indeed the part of the Census entry for Ely in 1861 with him in is indeed lost forever, then that is a pity.
That 1871 Census entry could well be him, though the age matches are not quite accurate, nor the one for 1881 and his widow Susan.  But I realise innacurately given ages in Census returns are commonplace.  Similarly, that death entry provided by Iem for 1875 could be him, though once again the age at death does not quite fit.  One can, however, say that he appears to die some time between 1871 and 1881.
I really do need to make that journey up Castle Hill to the CCRO to verify a few Parish Records, particularly the relevant baptisms and the burials.
Many thanks to everyone again,
Keith
