please help find birth & burial place - James Slack
« on: Sunday 12 November 17 16:30 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out where my gt grandfather was born and also where he is buried.  His name was James Slack and he was born around 1824 in, I think, either Norbury or Knotbury.  I also think he had a brother call Abraham who was born around 1822.  James died on the 13th January 1898 in Sutton Macclesfield Cheshire, but there are no records of his burial in that area.  I have done some searches and Longnor near Leek keeps being mentioned.  On the 1841/51 census it states that he was born in Norbury or (K) Notbury, and on subsequent census' it says born Wildborclough, and as Knotbury is next to Wildborclough it seems quite probable that Staffs is my missing link.  Until I find where he is either buried or was born and of course who were his parents,  I cannot get any further with my tree.  Any Help would be appreciated.

Was he a single man or married?

Possibly married to Margaret Kemp in later census - if so the marriage in 1854 will confirm the name of his father.

Thank you .  The Longnor connection looks promising, I will look into it.    Also it states on his marriage cert to Margaret Kemp, that his father was also called James, but it does not say whether he was still alive on that date.  I am beginning to think there are other first names involved other than James.  I also think James had a younger brother called Abraham, and they worked together in Wildborclough.

Right so you know who his father was - what occupation is listed for him on the marriage?

Who were the witnesses?

There are already many threads on this topic, including a pretty recent one posted and replied to at length on the Cheshire board (sorry can’t do links at the moment). This included all the details on his marriage certificate.
Because of the multiple threads there is a huge amount of duplicated work going on.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I think this is the Cheshire thread.

Thanks.  :) In reply #2 of that thread I have linked to a few of the others on the same topic.
