My gr gr grandfather was Andrew Forsyth born 1 Feb 1824 in Londonderry, Ulster.  He emigrated to Canada approx 1845 - 1855.  Once in Canada, he married Martha Maud Donnelly (also spelled Donelly, Donley) born 08 July 1827 in Armagh, Ulster.  She apparently emigrated to Canada in approx 1845 (yr from 1901 census) where she was to meet her two brothers in the Toronto area.  They had five children.  We do not know if Martha and Andrew met in Ireland or once they each arrived in Canada.  Any information would be greatly appreciated as we've hit a brick wall for both of them.
Thanks
Janette

Hello Janette,

What denomination was your gr gr grandfather? Was he a member of the Catholic faith, the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland) or possibly a Presbyterian?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.
