Henry Compton
« on: Sunday 21 January 18 12:57 GMT (UK) »
My Great x 4 Grandfather Henry Compton marrried my Great x 4 Grandmother Theodosia Smith (born 1786 in London)  on the 16th April 1808 in St Mary, Putney, London. I have managed to find quite a few records for Theodosia but cannot find any for Henry apart from christening records for their children. I don’t know where/when he was born or where/when he died. On one census entry for Theodosia in 1861 she is listed as married and not widowed. I was just wondering whether anybody could shed some light on Henry for me..

Many thanks!

Kind of difficult, isn't he? A gent. on most of the baptisms. And Theo* is always alone (with the children) on every census.

Which of the children are you connected to?

And Fred* married whom?

Just to check... you are certain that these are "yours".

Sorry.

Not sure if this is helpful, or just more confusing.

On Frederick's marriage to Eliza Sutton 1849 (is this the right one?) he names his father as Henry Compton -  Government Clerk

On the 1851 census for Chelsea there's:
Henry Compton mar 60 gentleman   British Subject
Fanny Compton  wife  42     Paris
Alfred Compton  son   24 clerk    British Subject

1841 Chelsea
Frances Compton  30   France
Augustus Compton   15   France
Alfred Compton   15    France

This seems to be the same Alfred, but again, Henry is missing

On the 1861 Alfred J. Compton - Clerk at Bank of England - France
is with his wife Ellen.

1866 Alfred J.E.Compton - widower married Rachel Johnson in Chelsea
BUT he names his father as Alfred Compton - deceased

Is this another Henry Compton who flits in and out of the family home?

ADDED   Alfred brother John Augustus married 1849.  He names his father as Henry Compton - gentleman

As I have it on my tree, Frederick married Eliza Sutton on the 3rd September 1849 in St Bride, Fleet Street and they then went on to have my 2 x great grandmother Elizabeth Sophie Compton. I have all the marriage records, baptism records and censuses attached that seem to corroborate this but I may be wrong as London obviously is a big place and my knowledge of London districts is not the best 🙂

To build on Lily M's post, in 1832 a Henry Compton was a clerk in the Stamp-Office.  I think it was based in Somerset Place. Perhaps TNA at Kew will have some records of his career.

There's a newspaper article referring to the Insolvent Debtor's Court

1833 - Henry Compton late of St.John's Wharf, Battersea   Clerk in the Stage Coach Duty Office, Somerset House

Clerk at Somerset House is also given as the occupation of the father of Henry Compton who married Eliza Robinson at Chelsea in 1840

You may be able to track his career at the Stamp Office from editions of the Royal Kalendar, some of which are online.
Here's a link to the relevant page of the 1833 edition ...
