I've located the children on the 1911 census living with a relative who's not yet on my tree (at least they have the same surname). They're listed with slightly different names, Ernest became Edward (his middle name), Herbert became Bertie and Rosina became Rosie.

Do you mean 1911 or is this a typo for 1901?  You had already found the whole family together in 1911, I think?

Wow, you're amazingly fast avm!!

They were 2 of the 5 on my list to check, along with duplicates of Ernest & Herbert and a Joseph born in Pontypridd (unlikely but I added him to the list anyway, you never know)  ;D
Thanks so much!

How curious.

In 1901 the four surviving children of George and Rose Elizabeth Harding (Edward 10, Bessie 8, Bertie 5, Rosie 2) are enumerated as “sons and daughters” of Frank (39) and Hetty (39) Harding, aren’t they.  They have an older daughter Hetty, 20 b Bloomsbury.

Yes, it is curious. I added a note to the census relationship area. Perhaps it was an informal adoption by a family member. Not sure what happened, but my curious streak will urge me to try and find out  :)

Have you found any other trace of Frank, Hetty snr or Hetty jnr?

Frank and Hetty at (both) 39 in 1901 are almost exactly the same ages as George and Rose at 50 and 49 in the next census. And Frank and George share an occupation: bookbinder’s porter.

If they can’t be found as a separate couple you may have to look into the possibility that Frank and Hetty are George and Rose in disguise.

Laura, the best way to learn is to ask. If someone on here gives you information and doesn't state their source, ask them where it came from. If you then keep a note you will gradually build up your bank of resources.
