If you don't have access to either Ancestry or FindMyPast at home, maybe your local library service can help with free access inhouse

Thanks Radcliff, the Kirkhale baptism is interesting but I suspect that his father is the same as Joseph Hedley for neighbouring Kirkwhelpington, who I think moved the family to Gateshead. None of that is certain though and this one remains a strong candidate.

Hi Dawnsh, and all becomes clear! That should now read 'was living in Oxford'. I am now located near Newcastle - I have a better view but I miss the ducks on the Thames  :)

Harlem, thanks for the clarification. I think the Joseph Hedley I am looking for was born in the old Simonburn Parish, but I can't find him in any of the available registers. I base that on his being a recipient of Simonburn Parish relief even after his wife died. I'm not sure he would receive that as a widower, though I might be wrong on that.

Dawnsh, thanks for the link. I actually come to this forum after 2 months of scouring the internet, Newcastle City Library, the NDFHS, and Woodhorn archives. However, though I am a historian and a reasonably proficient genealogist, I'm not as expert as so many are on here. Already the replies to my queries have opened some new paths forward and consolidated my thinking on some of my previous findings. I am hoping that will continue.
