Finding William FULLELOVE
« on: Saturday 06 August 05 08:14 BST (UK) »
HELP!
Research on the Fullelove/Fullalove/Fullilove family and William Fullelove was going really well until I discovered not one but two William's born in 1872!   Can anyone help me please?

This is the story so far -
My William (a Collier) married Mary Miller in Atherton Lancashire in Sept 1906 and their daughter, Elizabeth Alive Fullelove, was born in Nov 1906.  They both lived in Bag Lane Atherton.

William's father, according to his marriage certificate, was John Fullelove (a Blacksmith)

Now, William's father John Fullalove (the name spelling changes depending on who is telling the story)  is to be found on the 1901 census living in Bag Lane Atherton.  John is said to have been born in Hanford Staffordshire and is a Blacksmith.    So far so good.

The 1881 census shows a John Fullelove (born in Hanford) with his family living in Yorkshire and William is among his children and said to be born in Rotherham Yorkshire.  One of William's siblings is Sarah Ann Fullelove and a woman of the same name appears as a witness on William's marriage certificate in 1906 so I guessed she was William's sister.   Again, so far so good.

The problem starts when Wm Fullalove, age 28, shows up on the 1901 census in Bag Lane
(where John the father lives) but his place of birth is recorded as Warwick Birmingham!  At first  I thought he may have made a mistake because William's parents married in Warwick in 1870 but when I looked further I discovered another William Fullelove born in 1872 but with a father named William.

So I  seem to have the correct family in 1881 with my William born in Rotherham but in Bag Lane in 1901 the only William listed is the one born in Warwick!   And my William is nowhere to be found!

HELP PLEASE

Hi Shadrach,

I couldn't find your William in 1901, but here seems to be the one born Birmingham (parents Fanny and William)

1901:
RG13/3699
Folio 32 p. 16
South Manchester
Hulme St John the Baptist

18 Stanley Street

William Fallelove, head, 28, Saw sharpner (matches with his father's and his own previous occupation), b. Birmingham
Ellen, wife, 28, b. Manchester
David, son, 8ms, b. Manchester.

Therefore if you have found another William residing next to father John, then it seems he's very likely to be yours.

Hi Tati,
Thanks for looking - William Fullalove/Fullelove
living in Bag Lane Atherton in 1901 certainly seems
to be the right chap but the confusing thing is that
in 1881 his place of birth is given as Rotherham Yorkshire
but in 1901 it is given as Warwickshire.

The only thing that makes me think it is the same man
is the fact that William's parents married in Aston Warwick
2 years before he was born so perhaps he thought he was
born there too.

I cartainly think you are following the right track.
Perhaps William was born in Birmingham while mum was visiting somewhere there but the family were living in Rotherham or something the like?

The fact that your William (as opposed to cousin William born Birmingham) is missing from two censuses - 1891 and 1901 (I've checked 1891 and I presume you have looked thoroughly in 1901) would indicate there may be another reason he is absent, other than usual single man's census occupation of avoiding being enumerated. The usual reason for a younger man's absence for this length of time is military service abroad.

1881 census RG11 2738 folio 51
10 Brunswick St, Leek & Lowe, Staffordshire
William Fullelove 28 Stoke On Trent, Staffordshire,  Head  Married Circular sawyer (Disabled)
Fanny Fullelove 28 Birmingham, Warwickshire, Wife Married
William Fullelove 8  Birmingham, Warwickshire, Son
Fanny Fullelove 3 Birmingham, Warwickshire, Daughter
Rose H. Fullelove 3 mths  Leek, Staffordshire,  Daughter

I have read back on Tanja's email and William is found in Atherton on the 1901 census, giving Birmingham as his birthplace, so he's just missing from the 1891 census, which could just mean he didn't get enumerated, or he's much more difficult to spot.

Hi Everyone - With a name like William Fullelove you
would have thought he would be easy to track down!

One of the problems was that this family moved around
quite a bit and William's father John changed is occupation
along the way, from shoemaker to blacksmith.    If it wasn't for the fact
that William's marriage certificate of 1906 gives his father's name as
John and address as Bag Lane I would have been seriously been
inclined to think  the William Fullalove on the 1901 was census was not mine.

But the difference between the two Williams is the name
of their fathers.   The William born in Warwick has a father
name William and my chap has a father name John as per
the marriage certificate of 1906.

Tanja's suggestion of William's mum visiting relatives in Warwick
for his birth is a good one and then  Tanja finding the
2nd William Fullelove living in Birmingham in 1901 is
the clincher, I think we can safely say that William Fullelove in living
in Bag Lane in 1901 is mine!

Thanks for all the help, much appreciated
Shadrach

PS   There is a story in the family of some connection to Canal
boats so I wonder whether William could have been on a
boat in 1891 although I would have thought it inlikely considering
his occupation is recorded as a Miner.
