http://www.shadesofthedeparted.com/search?q=Abernethy also indicates an 1885 start for William Abernethy and details how he came to receive the Royal Warrant in 1900.

Scotsmum's "1885" looking spot on.
Have checked the 1884 Belfast and Ulster Province Directory and an Abernethy not listed as a photographer.
The next Directory is dated 1887 which confirms William Abernethy at 29 High St.

William Abernethy used a royal seal on his ' cardfooters' after 1900 - so definitely before then . . . .  but how long before?

My guess is mid 1880s the trim on the suit being what I am judging by, and the collar.

Hope I am not too far off the mark.  ;)

I'll look for a possible partner but not too good with Irish records.

My grandmother I am showing as the daughter of a James Corbett and Ellen Martin. I think there’s some family resemblance, no?
She was born in 1891.
