He wasn't married by 1939, so that cuts it down a bit. Are you sure that he and Lily were married?

Perhaps Lily Alice b 3 July 1901 was married to Alfred Edward Davis (died Barking 1972)?

IF Lily was born in Essex, this looks like a possible birth

EDIT: Probably not a she marries Thomas D Mumford in 1936 in Romford.
