London Census records
« on: Tuesday 13 March 18 14:14 GMT (UK) »
I am finding it very difficult to research a branch of the family that lived in London.  Is this because many of the records were destroyed in the Blitz, or simply because they are so vast?  It is really frustrating me!  Thanks.

Welcome to Rootschat  :)  Perhaps if you give us some names, possible locations and which census you are having trouble with - we might be able to help you.   :)
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Hi,

Welcome to Rootschat.   :)

As far as I know the only complete census to have been destroyed was 1931, which was lost in a fire. 1921 is not available yet so the latest census is 1911; the 1939 Register is available on FindMyPast.

Some small areas have been lost; for example parts of Woolwich 1861 census where one of my lines lived.
Howard , Viney , Kingsman, Pain/e, Rainer/ Rayner, Barham, George, Wakeling (Catherine), Vicary (Frederick)   all LDN area/suburbs  Ottley/ MDX,
Henman/ KNT   Gandy/LDN before 1830  Burgess/LDN
Barham/SFK   Rainer/CAN (Toronto) Gillians/CAN  Sturgeon/CAN (Vancouver)
Bailey/LDN Page/KNT   Paling/WA (var)

Thanks for that info.  I am researching two ancestors, Wm John Shepherd born about 1857 and his wife Sarah Ann Foy born about the same time, married at St Johns Walworth.  My first connection to them is the marriage certificate of 1877.  So they are both missing from at least 2 census records.
