Have you got any details about him, Keith, in addition to his dates?

In my reading about menswear in 1870-1890, I've found that there was a style called  'Varsity' jackets - Cambridge ones were subtly different from Oxford ones. I don't think you had to have been to the universities to wear them though.

Education: in 1871 he is a scholar but I note his older sister is a 'student' - could she have been at uni in those days? I am not aware that went to uni.

No not a 'uniform' - it was just what the style of the jacket was called. I meant occupation, etc.  I'll look him up.

Added - see he was married by 1881

he was a Grocer's Manager in 1881, possibly with his own shop in 1891/1901, a baker's roundsman in 1911 (possibly working with his brother who had a bakery business) & on his DC my grandfather has given his occupation as retired master baker

You may already have this information on Charles John Gearing, but I thought I would post it anyway.
He was born in Waltham in 1860, son of Charles Pembroke Gearing, also a photographer.
Charles John seemed to have a number of studios, he was at 52 Regent Street in 1881. He also had studios at 433 Strand WC, 35 Milkwood Road SE and 57 Durham Road N.
In 1891 he was a photographer at Gleneagle House, Gleneagle Road, Streatham.

Thank you tomkin - this is my great grandfather & he looks so much like my own father - great jacket & tie colours.

Another lovely colour version.
