Obituary Lookup Please - Lieutenant Edward Hartley RN - Died 1813
« on: Saturday 24 March 18 08:33 GMT (UK) »
Seeking an obituary for my ancestor Lieutenant Edward Hartley who died in September 1813 (buried 8/9/1813) at Gosport, Hampshire. Edward was born in Manchester Lancashire in 1777. He served in the Royal Navy at Trafalgar as Masters Mate on board the "Bellerephon" and was promoted to Lieutenant for that arena of battle. Thanks, Chrs Rob

If this is the Edward Hartley who was a midshipman on the Atlas in 1798 and Defiance in 1799, he had a wife Grace who died circa 1798/9*  per the Allotment Declarations.  This marriage doesn't seem to feature in the online trees.

Marriage to Grace Osborne, Stoke Damerel, 3 April 1797

Child Edward Osborn Hartley born 27 January 1798, baptised at Stoke Damerel 27 May 1798. Per the Allotment Declarations, a Jno Paulby seems to have been appointed guardian.

*Grace Hartley buried at Stoke Damerel 3 October 1798 age 21

My Edward Hartley married Sarah Giles on 12th August 1801 at Alverstoke. He served on the "Bellerephon" but I am unaware of other service in the Royal Navy. Rob

Looking at the 1797 and 1801 marriage register signatures, I'd say it is definitely the same person.
