Date of photograph please Eliza Casbard
« on: Saturday 31 March 18 10:50 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I would be very grateful if someone could date this photograph please, plus any other observations regarding it would be most welcome. I wondered for instance whether there was any significance to the floral arrangement?
Thank you so much
Best wishes from Quester

Hi

This one seems to have been overlooked.

I would say it's 1880s and I don't think there would be any particular significance in the flowers. Rustic and nature-type props were a quite common feature in photographs at this time.

Do you have information about the photographer or anything on the back that might help with further info.

A lovely photo  :)

Agree with Gadget & would tweak the date to mid-late decade.
In early photography floral arrangements alluded to artistic homemaking skills but as Gadget says just a nice touch to the picture & photographers always wanted to do something with hands by this time.

Hi Gadget & Jim1,
Thank you so much for your observations. It ties in very well, because she was born in 1869 and I wonder whether perhaps the photo was taken for her 21st birthday. If indeed, people recognised the 21st birthday then as they do now?
Best Wishes from Quester

Not sure if it would be her 21st  (1890) - maybe some other event or just to have a photo to give family/friends. Do you have more details - back of photo or photographer?

Was she the Eliza Amelia who married in 1897 (Islington Q1)?

Hi Gadget
Yes, that is the correct one - she married 10th January 1897 to Charles Slate. I think you are right, the photograph is probably slightly earlier than 1890 so it would not have been her 21st, maybe just a photo to give to someone.
Thanks for taking an interest.
