That would have made life easier had we known William had a middle name.

WW2 Draft does not mean William served - otherwise known as "The Old Mans Draft"

https://www.newberry.org/old-mans-draft

The U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index would indicate a claim was made in 1947 - it doesn't say life claim so I wouldn't think it was a death claim - could be he retired about then  ???

The SSDI (Social Security Death Index) was not up and running until about 1963 so he might not show on that which could mean he passed away between 1947 - 1963.

Michigan Death Index -

Try Find a Grave to see if he is listed

Who is Mrs Chillis ? Is that a relative ?

I think that means the information was just added to that index in 1977

More questions than answers but also bear in mind that although we found a marriage record for Helen Samuel to Robert McIntosh 23 November 1928 in York Ontario.  The death certificate of John McDonald in Toronto, had a relative names Helen McArthur.  So did Robert Mcintosh pass away ? Did Helen and Robert divorce ?  Is Helen McArthur, Helen Samuel McIntosh  ???
