Would a death certificate from 1940 give me place of birth, I know Thomas Cockburn was born 27/04/1899 but cannot find place of birth.

I presume you're talking about England and Wales?

Have you found him on census records for 1901 or 1911 which will give you a birth place?
Or do you have a marriage certificate which would give you his father's name, if you are unsure which Thomas Cockburn he is on the census records.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

If he was born in April 1899 then his birth, in theory should be registered in the June quarter 1899.
There are four birth refs on the GRO site for Thomas Cockburn registered in the June quarter
Rothbury mmn Cockburn
Sunderland mmn Dinning
Bolton mmn Lynn
S.Shields mmn Watson
Emeltom
Smith Tiplady Boulton Branthwaite King Miller Woolfall Bretherton Archer and many more

Thanks.
He married Esther Rudd in 1922 in Wigton which is were she is from, I have found him in the 1939 register but that does not give a place of birth, he was a farmer.
Have not got marriage certificate yet.
Will keep looking.

Emelton found four possible births for you, until you get the marriage cert and find out who his father was I'm afraid you're not going to get anywhere, apart from risking barking up the wrong tree.

Hi,
To add a few possibilities, unfortunately there are some Thomas COCKBURNs of the right age in the 1901 Scotland census.
Regards,
Daisy
