If it were the correct birth for Ernest then maybe Kate Allen née Compton was using the name of Mary.

As far as George being listed as the father’s name it is possible that and informant simply got it wrong. The age of death fits for Charles as does him being born in London.

I’ve found Charles up to the 1891 census, but not on the 1901. Do you have him? I think I have his parents with children Rose and Ethel on the 1901 in Hammersmith.

It’s is all just guesswork on my part.

The father of this Charles  Frederick ALLEN was George ALLEN, an undertaker.

The marriage certificate for  Charles  Frederick ALLEN and Kate COMPTON shows Kate's age as 21 in 1907.
The only point of similarity is that this Charles  Frederick ALLEN was a greengrocer at marriage

Oh I see thank you for explaining,

Yes that would be his parents in Hammersmith with children Ethel and Rose (my lovely greatgrandmother)

No I dont have him in the 1901, I thought I did considering he was the reason I started I started this family tree a couple of yrs ago!! 😂

Thank you again all so kind and ridiculously clever at looking up all this extra info for me x

Going back to the beginning, how do you know that it is your Charles coming out on the Waipara, in 1909?

I guess you need to connect Charles to Robert Mawby when they were all still living in England. Maybe Charles worked on his farm.

Marriages Jun 1893 Spaulding 7a 750
Lucy Sophia DEBENHAM to Robert Osborne MAWBY

The Mawby children and their mother’s maiden name:

MAWBY, ROBERT NOEL ANTHONY mmn DEBENHAM
GRO Reference: 1895  M Quarter in BURY SAINT EDMUNDS  Volume 04A  Page 820

MAWBY, GEOFREY OSBORN mmn DEBENHAM
GRO Reference: 1896  D Quarter in BURY SAINT EDMUNDS  Volume 04A  Page 821

Robert and wife on the 1901 are at Chelsham, Surrey: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9X6-8Z8

The boys are at their Grandmothers: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XS8B-2JK

No sign of Charles or Mary.

Have you considered this one for Charles on the 1901? I wonder if someone can see who he is the paying guest of:

Charles Allen
Hammersmith, London, Middlesex, England
Age: 20
Occupation: Green Grocer
Relationship to Head of Household: Paying Guest
Birth Year (Estimated): 1881
Birthplace: Fulham
Page Number: 27

You've got me thinking now.. lol

Im sure it was him as it works out with similar dates my grandmother spoke to me about but it feels like something doesn't quite add up!!
Maybe I need to go back to basics..start a fresh and see if I can finally find him..x

FYI.
In 1891 Charles F. ALLEN, the son of the undertaker, aged 10 years, lives in Kensington. He was later to become the greengrocer who married Kate COMPTON.

He is with his father George (the undertaker), his mother Annie, one elder brother and 5 6 sisters.
