I  can't see any birth/baptism for James on FreeBMD, FreeREG etc or James S on the census.

You also mention the surname Bartlett.  How does this relate to James??

Link didnt work for me.

I presume James is the one who was a Hawker?
1871 in Cornwall born c 1859 Bridport, Dorset
1881 married to Sarah, living in Dorset, born c 1858 Dorset
1891 back in Cornwall born c 1858 Dorset, Mother BETSY born c 1818 Somerset there also
Havent found 1901 but last Census is born c 1859 Kilhampton, Cornwall

Do you have the M/C, I presume this is it;

Sept 1879,  Axminster 5b 27
James COOPER/Sarah ROBERTS only names on page.

Trish :)

I don’t see any James S Cooper claiming a Steeple birthplace c1857 - not even Trish’s one :)

Is there a typo in the opening post?

Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)

Thanks very much for everyones interest in assisting me.

Problem solved, I am very sorry I was mislead by the title of the information I located in on-line records which read;

James S Cooper - China War 1857 born steeple

However after reading the information again I now see that he was born 01/39 Steeple

Information:
 , C76. Dasher, 13/08/62, [34/4], Discharged. St Vincent 04/05/61. b. Steeple. Dorset 01/39, CS 14247

 Rank:
 Orderly

 Service Number:
 2

 Campaign Medals:

 Second China War Medal

The Second China War Medal was issued to James S Cooper and members of the British Army and Royal Navy who took part in the Second Opium War of 1856 to 1860 against China.

Six clasps were authorised for the recipient indicating service in a particular campaign or battle.

 Clasps Awarded:
 Canton 1857

  Service:
 Royal Navy

 Ship:
 HMS Sampson

 Collection:
 The China Medal Roll British Navy & Army

As such I have now confirmed that this is my 3rd G/Uncle, regards Jason
