This appears to have been copied from some other document  There is no birth reg for Joseph on freebmd

1881 shows his birthplace as Ewhurst

Have you looked for William & Mary on earlier censuses to establish their respective parentage?

hi. the truth is i don't know much at all about the matthews line..my great grandparents divorced..and my great grandfather disappeared pretty much..and because they were divorced no one kept tracks of him...in his ww1 canadian soldier war papers..it said that he was born in hastings england..december 04, 1893 or 1894...he was a ship stoker by occupation according to the papers.. his closest of kin was a mary matthews who was listed as his mother...i googled his name before and i only found a william matthews and a mary holman...i was browsing around and i thought that i saw a charles matthews listed b 1846-1932 and that he had a sibling named william...and i thought that maybe that was the william
