Backer Rolling Assistant

It's definitely backer, as it was printed. Should I just assume it was baker and they were terrible spellers, or is backer a thing? Thanks.

Where there any punctuation marks, it could make a difference.
ie; backer ; roller's assistant
assists roller (298) q.v. at back of rolling mill; lifts and handles heavy bars and sheets.
