I don't know why, but for some reason, as soon as I saw this picture, I got the impression that he was posing with a pistol, mimicking an actor like James Cagney. I can almost see him saying "you dirty rat!" while posing. It looks to me as if the hand which is missing could have been deliberately erased to remove the weapon. I can't think of anything else he could have been holding which would need to be deleted.

kizmiaz ... Not sure on the pistol .... :D

Firstly I don't think the uniform is of an officer .... who were the ones issued with pistols ... If we assume it was then he would have a holster and lanyard on the right side (assuming that standard issue holsters and lanyards were catering only for right handed officers :))

Secondly ... there was a so-called "gentlemans pose" with one's left hand in your pocket and your right hand out ... you will find a lot of early c1900 poses like this ..

just my two cents worth ... ;D

Kizmiaz ,Gary56,

Not an officer, my father who enlisted into the Army in 1933, I was told the photo was taken at Aldershot at the end of his training, before being posted to Egypt.

I thought he had his hand in his pocket or slightly pulled up  round to his back
what a good result though.
