Beginner looking for help with a mystery
« on: Saturday 09 June 18 13:00 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Very new here and hoping someone can help with one of my ancestors Joseph Blackman.

My great grandfather was Arthur William Blackman born 10 Jan 1878. I have quite a lot of information on him and his war record so  I ordered his birth certificate and his parents are listed as Emma Blackman (formerly Haseman) and Joseph Blackman. I can not seem to find any marriage certificate for his parents or a birth record for Joseph Blackman. So I had hit a brick wall going back any further.

I did find Arthur and his father Joseph (born Lancashire, Manchester) at 3 New Peter Street, Westminster on the 1881 census living with Alice Ruler, Joseph's niece. This is where things got interesting ... Someone contacted me regarding Alice Ruler and said they thought it was a match to someone in their tree however her surname was wrong and should be Rouiller. After some investigation I found her parents and living in their house was Walter Blackman (nephew). I had no information on Walter and could not find any records until someone else contacted me and said that Walter looked to be an ancestor of theirs but his name was actually Walter Blackman Partington ....

Intrigued I ordered up the birth certificate for Walter and amazingly his parents are Joseph Partington and Emma Partington (formerly Haseman) his name is "Walter Blackman" and he was born in exactly the same place as Arthur William, New Peter Street St John Westminster on 25 Apr 1879.

Now I am wondering why Partington is used as the name on Walter's birth certificate and whether this was Joseph's real name ? But then how did Blackman come into it?

Sorry for the long post on my first one here. Hope someone can shed some light.

Thank  you

Joseph Blackman and Emma Haseman would have been married in Emma's home church, so have you looked there for the marriage record?

Have you looked for a birth record for Joseph Blackman as Joseph Partington?

Alice Ruler/Rouiller is probably just a difference in  spelling until proven otherwise, in my opinion.

And can you clarify Walter's birth certificate? Don't they just list the child's first name? Like Walter, [son of] Joseph Whatever and Emma Whatever (formerly Haseman)?

Besides that, I don't know how much help I can be.

I was thinking that is most probably her death as Joseph is a widower on the 1881 census and could also maybe explain why her youngest child is with relatives and her niece is in the household.

Thanks for your replies :)

I have looked for birth records under Partington and it seems to be a popular surname in Lancashire areas. Hopefully I can find a link

Joseph was in his late 40's when the two boys were born so there is a good chance that he was already married.  He was also born before civil registration began so you would be looking at church records for a baptism.

Emma Haseman is 5 b Walworth in 1851, daughter of John (in Camberwell).

Among her siblings is Harriett Haseman b abt 1834 Malling, Kent. I think she becomes Harriet Roullier, mother of Alice.  Not sure whether she was ever lawfully married to Richard Roullier though (she did marry a William Collet in Camberwell in 1852 and they are together, as Collett, in 1861).

Birth reg: Alice Mary Roullier, mother’s maiden name Haseman, Jun qtr 1869 Camberwell.
