Surname mystery ? Who are the grandchildren
« on: Monday 08 August 05 21:18 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have been tracing descendants of my Allsopp family and I have hit another mystery that I am hoping some bright spark on Rootschat can sort out for me.

1891

George Allsop  54  Gas lab  b. Prestwood
Elizabeth  "      53                b. Whiston
George     "      21                b. Prestwood
Benjamin  "      17                b. Prestwood
May          "       12                b. Ellastone
GE)RGE E STENDELL 1mt  gson b. Lullington

The one mt old gson is my prob. Think this is his surname but who are his parents and where are they.

In 1901 this is the family

Elizabeth Allsopp  61 Widow laundress   b. Whiston, Staffs
Benjamin      "       27   son                      b. Prestwood, Staffs
EDWARD STENDELL  10  gson                      b. Lullington, Derby
CHARLES HENRY STENDELL 8 gson                 b. Lullinton, Derby
George Allsopp     1  gson                         b. Longton, Staffs

So now there is another gson from the mystery Stendell family.

(Both census the family were living in Lullington, Derbyshire)

George and Elizabeth Allsop had 3 other  daughters (other than May who is on the 1891.

Mary Ann b. abt 1860 Prestwood, Staffs
Elizabeth b. abt 1864 Prestwood, Staffs
Catherine b. abt 1867 Prestwood, Staffs

I am presuming one of these girls is the mother but can't find any marriages or likely candidates on the census or anywhere.

Can anyone help find out who these gsons belong to???

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks Angela

Charles Henry STENDELL
Burton on Trent
Vol 6b  Page 397
Sep q 1892

The cert would tell - but look for parents in the same area on censuses??

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Thanks Arranroots.

Does Burton on Trent district cover Lullington??

They must have been around at least for the 1891 census.

I went through all the pages of Lullington on the 1891 census and couldn't find anything useful.

I am really stuck on this.

thanks for your help

Angela.

Burton upon Trent
Created 1st July 1837. Mainly in Staffordshire, but included parts of Derbyshire.
Sub-districts : Burton upon Trent; Gresley; Repton; Tutbury.
GRO volumes : XVII (1837-51); 6b (1852-1930).
Anslow, Barton under Needwood, Branstone, Burton Extra, Burton upon Trent, Dunstall, Hanbury, Horninglow, Outwoods, Rolleston, Scropton, Stapenhill, Stretton, Tatenhill, Tutbury, Winshill, Wychnor.

From Genuki

Have looked for the surname in Derbyshire, but nothing obvious!  There are lots of ALLSOPP marraiges, but none for STENDELL or variant spelling that I could see.

You need a local expert!

Hi again.

Just found out that Lullington is 7 miles south of Burton on Trent so would presume that it is covered.

Still can't find anything else though

All the best Angela

Is this one of the marriages you are looking for:-
from www.freebmd.rootsweb.com
June Quarter 1890 Barnsley, West Riding of Yorkshire
Vol. 9c  Pg. 258
Edward Stendell = Elizabeth Allsop.  ONLY THE CERTIFICATE WILL TELL IF THIS IS CORRECT.
I cannot find them on a Census.
However 1901 RG13/2455 Pg 26 Sch 111
Adlestrop (St. Mary), Gloucestershire
Stendell Elizabeth Servant Married 42 Cook/Housekeeper Domestic    Alton Staffs.
This may be a long shot, (servants often stated younger age) however on the 1861 Census Charles & Mary Ann Allsop are both shown as being born at Alton Staffs.
Hope this does not add to the confusion.
Spendlove.

Spendlove, Strutt in London & Middlesex.

Thanks Spendlove,

This is all very interesting stuff. I think before I go any further I will get one of the gsons birth certs and then work from that. Its the only sure way of knowing who his parents were.

Thanks for all  your time and effort. Its very much appreciated.

All the best Angela
