He married a Canadian Girl Ellen Lane 6 June 1867 when he was stationed in Canada. His parents were listed as Edward Haughton and Rose Matilda. His dau Ethel was born in Jersey in 1870 and son Percival George born in Aldershot in 1872. He also had daughter Florence, sons Frederick and Albert. Any information on him and his family welcome.

Diplodicus - you may have missed the fact that this was 1847, even school attendance wasn't compulsory until 1880 and then only to age 10.

Sorry, I didn't make my point clearly. I was trying to say that until relatively recently youngsters aged fourteen were leaving to school for work.
Thomas, Davies, Jones, Walters, Daniel in Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion. That should narrow it down a bit!
Vincent: Fressingfield, Suffolk, Stockton & Sunderland.
Murtha/Murtaugh: Dundalk & Sunderland
Ingram: Cairnie by Huntly, Scotland then Abergavenny, Monmouthshire.
Bardouleau: London - in memory of my stepmother Annie Rose née Bardouleau who put up with a lot from me.

On the 1851 census there's:

Edwin Haughton, visitor, unmarried, 4, b. Newington, Surrey
Rosa Haughton, visitor, widow, 29, miliner, b. Steatham, Surrey

They're at 2 Barton Cottages, Cross St, Lambeth in the same household as

Alfred Platt, head, married, 31, painter, b. Clapham, Surrey
Ellen Platt, wife, married, 29, landress, b. Tooting, Surrey

Could that be him?
Always looking for GOODWINS in Berkshire :)

Have you looked at Houghton on Surnames Interest list to see if any match his place and timeframe? If you find any likely ones try a pm to the researcher. You can add Edward to the list.

You can search past threads on RootsChat. Choose Search on brown bar above.
