Finding a death without paying for a death certificate
« on: Tuesday 17 July 18 13:35 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to get some idea when Mary Harrington (nee Sullivan) died. She was born in about 1853

I know it had to be between 23rd November 1875 when she married Cornelius Harrington in Westminster and 28 June 1884 when he married his second wife also in Westminster.

The trouble is that the family moved around so much that although the obvious place to look for a death certificate SHOULD be Westminster, it could be anywhere including West Ham or even potentially Ireland. Members of the family also tended to be economical with the truth, particularly their ages.

Mary Harrington isn't exactly a rare surname.

Other than buying lots of death certificates until I find the correct one is there a set of records to search that might identify when she died?

The family were very poor and are very unlikely to have left a will.

It's no magic bullet, but have you found Mary Harrington on the 1881 census in England? That might help to refine your search period.

I have started with 1000 "possible deaths" on my main list - and that's if I close my eyes to the idea of "could've died anywhere".

There are ways to eliminate a lot of people from the list.  It's laborious though.

Make a list of every possible death.
Cross off those too old/too young entirely.

Take what's left and check probate for every single one - noting the details down before crossing them off or leaving them on the list.

Go through the newspapers for deaths and cross those off if you can see they're not a match.

Use any/all sources imaginable, obtainable and achievable ... to continually revisit your list to "plump out" the lives of everybody on the list to continually dismiss them or leave them on the list.

You'll have to even "build some quick family trees" for some to dismiss them.  e.g. you might find a few that never left their village... they're off the list :)

Over time you'll at least dwindle your list down to a few .... and might even be lucky enough to hit "the one" by fluke.

You keep the written list because as you continually stumble across a "maybe" you can quickly scan through and see if they're on your list already ... and the new information might dismiss them, or keep them on it.

Keep your list annoted with what you've checked/why you've dismissed them, so you can always revisit it and know the answer to "why did I cross that one off?"

The 1875 marriage was in the parish of St Georges Hanover Square.  The 1881 (presumably the same as Paul found) is in the same parish but that Cornelius and Mary go on to 1911 at least with umpteen children along the way.  However, that marriage was in 1865 and she was born 1845.

What was your Cornelius's birth date/occupation?

That's the pair I'm look at, still going strong in 1911 after 10 children (9 surviving) and 46 years of marriage.  Mary seems to be elsewhere in 1901, probably having a lie down!

How sure are you of the 2nd marriage, does his age/occupation fit, father's name/occ. & is he stated as widower?

Were there any children from '1st' marriage & do names tie in with what's been found regarding the couple in 1911?

Edit, just noticed the date of the 1911 couples marriage  ::)
