Hoefner to Toronto in 1884
« on: Tuesday 09 August 05 15:07 BST (UK) »
I have been reading through some of the responses on this list, and the detail is really amazing!  I wonder if one of you wizards can help me with this family please:-
Frederick Thomas HOEFNER b 14/9/1841 , d12/9/1910 Totonto
Eunice Ann b 29/10/1841, d abt 1944 Toronto
Eunice Sophia Eliza b 8/8/1868,  d 1/8/1949 London Ontario
Archibald Frederick Christian b 13/1/1870 d 18/12/1905 San Antonio, Texas
Louise Sarah b 19/4/1871
Lilian 16/9/1880
Benjamin Preston b 7/12/1881
Isabelle Emma b 23/8/1883, d 21/6/1932
(all the above born in England)
May b 11/6/1886 Toronto
Miles Frederick b 12/1/1890 Toronto

I found them in Toronto Junction in the 1901 census (they were the only Hoefners listed), from which I know that the family arrived in Canada in 1884. I also know that the family trade was Coopering (barrel making).  Can anybody fill in some of the gaps for me please?

Thanks in advance
Doreen

Hi Doreen

Children of the above:

Eunice Sophia Eliza Hoefner, borne August 8, 1868, Saturday morn ½ past 4 (nicknamed “Queenie,” died August 1, 1949, London, Ontario)

May, borne June 11, 1885, 9 oclock

Miles Frederick Hoefner, borne Sunday morning 8 oclock January 12 / 1890

Quote
In the obituary of Eunice Taylor Hoefner (the mother of all the kids listed in the bible) it is mentioned that her husband (Fredrick Thomas Hoefner)"was the son of a German count who escaped from his country to England to free himself from the tryanny of the Prussian king..."

I believe that Miles may have ended up in New York - perhaps if you post a message on the US Look ups for Miles Hoefner in the 1930 Census you could find more information.

Miles Hoefner Birth:  abt 1890
Residence:  1920 Erie, New York
1920 United States Federal Census

Miles Hoefner Birth:  abt 1890
Residence:  1930 Erie, New York
1930 United States Federal Census

Miles Hoefner Birth:  abt 1912
Residence:  1930 Erie, New York
1930 United States Federal Census

Hope this helps

Thelma

Hi Thelma
Yes, I have seen the two quotes before, and the dates of birth fitted in with what I had already gleaned from FreeBMD records.
The bit about his father being a Prussian Count, is, in my opinion, a fantasy... I have 2 generations prior to Frederick & Eunice living in Shadwell & Mile End Old Town, all males being Coopers, and a marriage on Pallotts of Frederick Hoefner & Anne Banks in 1817. All else aside, I don't suppose a Prussian Count would have been admitted to the Coopers Guild even if he had begged ;D

The bit about Miles is new to me, though we have been told that at least some of the Toronto group later moved to Buffalo, but don't know who or when.

I am in unfamiliar territory here as this family is quite a recent find, and all the rest of my family stayed in & around London until after WWII.

Thank you for your help
Doreen

Well- I am in Toronto, and I find one resource that helps is

http://thestar.pagesofthepast.ca/

When I get ambitious - I'll get a 24 hour subscription - and hunt the birth, marriage, death pages for different surnames to grab some info from the obits.  I find as you get into the 1930's and beyond you find they become more common.  With a surname like Hoefner, you should be able to possibly find something (I would start looking for the obit in and around 1944 - you can search 5 years at a time)

Also good to remember the British Pound is worth $2.16 here right now, so that would effectively halve any costs on the site...

That site looks like it might be interesting. I think I'll wait to see if any more names crop up first, so that I can get max benefit.

Thank you for your suggestion

don't know if you found this online.....

Richard Franklin "Franklin" Fielding was born on the 7th of April, 1866 in Footscray, Victoria. Franklin made the journey with his parents and siblings from Victoria to England, and then on to Canada. Franklin worked as a printer in Toronto, Ontario, where he married Eunice Sophia Eliza Hoefner in April, 1894. Franklin and Eunice had three children, Lynn, Vera and Spencer. Franklin died on July 15th, 1926 in Toronto, Ontario, and Eunice in August, 1949 in London, Ontario. A bible that was presented to Franklin's father, Richard Fielding on his immigration to Australia is still in the possession of one of Franklin's descendents.

Hi Doreen

have you thought of emailing the lady who posted part of the obit for Eunice Hoefner? The rest of the obit may tell where her children were living and the married names of the daughters.

http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/message/rw/surnames.hoefner/1.3

She mentions a family tree - that might fill in some of your blanks.

Here are the burial sites for the Fieldings
http://www.islandnet.com/cgi-bin/ms2/jveinot/search

Quote
FIELDING Eunice E. Woodland, London (Section G,H,I,O) Middlesex London MX-152-3
FIELDING Richard F. Woodland, London (Section G,H,I,O) Middlesex London MX-152-3
FIELDING Spencer F. Woodland, London (Section G,H,I,O) Middlesex London MX-152-3

perhaps someone from that area would be able to advise about where to look for obits

Hello

the 1901 census is back up

Here are the Spanners in Toronto

Quote
44 Spanner William M   Head M Mar 7 1866 35
4 47   44 Spanner Louise F   Wife M Apr 19 1871 29
4 48   44 Spanner Edna F   Daughter S Jun 6 1898 2
4 49   44 Spanner Eva F   Daughter S Jun 28 1900 Baby
4 50   44 Waldon Lucy F   Boarder S Aug 19 1881 19

the Spanner in WW2 is not a grandson as his father is a 12 year old in this census - maybe a cousin.

Maybe some one who lives in Ontario / Toronto may be able to point out some other areas to look
